The silver denarius of Tiberius is considered the most likely candidate for the coin mentioned in the Bible Book of Mark 12:13-17, and known as the "Tribute Penny" (the denarius was translated into "penny" in the King James version of the Bible) because of Jesus' command to "render to Caesar that which is Caesar's and render to God that which belongs to God". Tiberius was the step-son of emperor Augustus. He succeeded Augustus after the latter's death, and was proved to be an able administrator. The Roman empire prospered under his rule, but there was much treason and internal strife within the emperor's family. The Ministry and Crucifixion of Jesus Christ occurred during Tiberius' reign. The back of the coin features a picture of a seated female usually identified as Livia, mother of Tiberius and wife of Augustus dressed as Pax, although the exact identity remains unknown. This frame has an old world finish and construction to match the ancient look of the coin.
