To learn more about AUSTRALIAN PEANUT WOOD, continue reading below.

PEANUT WOOD is an unusual petrified driftwood gem material from Australia that has nothing to do with "peanuts."

Peanut wood is a variety of petrified wood that is usually dark brown to black in color. It is recognized by its white-to-cream-color markings that are ovoid in shape and about the size of a peanut. It received its name from these peanut-size markings. It is a gem with a very unusual history.

Peanut Wood began its life as conifer trees on land in Western Australia. When they died, They became driftwood in the salty sea. An ancient marine larvae ate into the wood leaving tunnels.  The wood eventually sank and became buried in sediment which washed into the tunnels, filling them.  As this petrified, the wood became the brown portion and the sediment the light colored spots.  It is surprising that an ancient waterlogged wood that was bored by shipworms is now a popular gem that is cut, worn, displayed, and talked about all over the world.
